SPRING 2020

Greetings from Ohio State!

Beth A. Wiser, PhD

Dear colleagues:

I have used the word “unprecedented” more in the past two months than I have in my entire career. And you are living it every day. I have watched the role you have played with your seniors, reassuring them and helping them navigate their post-secondary plans without having all the answers yourselves.

We are committed to getting those answers to you as decisions are made, and to that end, you might hear from me more frequently than usual. Remember that our communications related to COVID-19 are found on the school counselor website.

As we watch our new class of Buckeyes shape up, and we receive emails about how excited students are to join the Buckeye nation, it gives us hope … hope that these amazing young people will make their mark and shape our Ohio State community. Thank you for your role in guiding their decisions.

Best regards,

Beth A. Wiser, PhD
Executive Director of Undergraduate Admissions

Deadline and timeline updates

Waitlist students will hear by June 1

While we have kept our May 1 acceptance fee deadline, we know there will be some students who need flexibility. They are encouraged to reach out to staff at askabuckeye@osu.edu.

Students who accepted a waitlist offer from us will have a final decision by June 1. We know this time of year is critical for students as they make their final decisions, and we will make every effort to get decisions out as quickly as we can.

We also recognize that, given the unusual situation, there may be students who realize after May 1 that their plans have changed and they need to look at Ohio State as an option for fall enrollment. We are happy to work with these students on a case-by-case and space-available basis.

Final transcripts requested

Our annual final high school transcript request is coming to your inbox next week. This request is a reminder to send us final high school transcripts (that show graduation date) for those students attending an Ohio State campus this fall. If you’d like to get a jump-start, visit the counselor login page. (You can request login credentials from that page, if you don't have them.)

COVID-19 update

We've updated our FAQ page

Undergraduate Admissions has updated our FAQs related to COVID-19 to include answers to many of the common questions we’ve been getting from admitted and prospective students. This list will continue to be updated as decisions are made. If we're missing something, let us know!

Campus visits

The welcome mat is out … virtually!

In lieu of in-person visits (which remain canceled through July), we've launched a number of virtual resources for prospective students. These resources include live admission events, major exploration resources, videos, and a "Build your Ohio State" tool that allows students to curate information about Ohio State to just the majors and extracurriculars they're interested in.

Buckeye Student Leadership Academy

June program has been moved online

We have selected our next cohort of rising seniors to participate in the annual Buckeye Student Leadership Academy (BSLA), and they will receive their notification in the coming days. This year, the program will engage students through a series of online workshops throughout their senior year. We continue to be appreciative for your promotion of this program.

Welcome, Chelsea Melzer!

Meet our new admissions counselor for Canton, Youngstown and Pittsburgh

We’re excited to introduce our new admissions counselor for the Canton, Youngstown and Pittsburgh territory, Chelsea Melzer. New engineering degree offered on regional campuses

Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology

Do you know students who like figuring out how things work? Do they have an interest in helping individuals work more efficiently or better? Then the major in engineering technology might be right for them.

Offered at Ohio State's Lima, Mansfield and Marion campuses beginning in autumn 2020, the engineering technology degree prepares students to take leadership roles that help manufacturers operate their organizations more effectively.

Engineering technology students are part of Ohio State’s highly ranked College of Engineering, which means they’ll have access to mentorship, internships and capstone experiences with manufacturers, while learning in state-of-the-art facilities. Learn more.

College of Arts and Sciences

Offerings and resources

The College of Arts and Sciences at Ohio State is unique in its wide offering of interdisciplinary academic programs, allowing students to be creative in combining their specific interests across academic areas to design and meet their own vision for the future.

We encourage counselors and prospective students to use our explore tool to research the 80+ major and 100+ minor programs offered within the College of Arts and Sciences, and our future students webpage to explore opportunities outside of the classroom such as education abroad, service learning, research and internship opportunities.

In addition to traditional academic programs, we’ve also developed a new certificate program with initial certification offerings in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and Translation and Interpretation.

We encourage newly-admitted students to consider our PASS program for an opportunity to start building peer communities as the fall semester approaches. PASS is a selective academic learning community for students who have a shared interest in the academic, cultural, career and community benefits of service and leadership development.

Please visit our high school counselor website for more information from individual departments.

Spanish for heritage language learners

A course that fulfills Ohio State's language requirement

Ohio State's Department of Spanish and Portuguese offers three Heritage Language courses designed to meet the needs of Spanish heritage language learners. A heritage language learner is an individual who has grown up speaking, listening, reading and/or writing Spanish with family or in their community.

The department offers three levels to meet the needs of students with different abilities and levels of proficiency. Each focuses on the student's background and provides a curriculum that is both engaging and culturally relevant.

If students successfully complete the beginner level, they meet Ohio State's (foreign) language requirement. However, by completing the next two levels they can achieve a higher level of proficiency in all areas (speaking, listening, reading and writing).

Learn more or reach out to Dr. Elena Foulis with questions.
